Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “It is one of the most beautiful compensations of this life that no man can sincerely try to help another without helping himself.” This past year, hundreds of alumni from across the nation volunteered to lead Alumni Clubs, coordinate reunions, serve on Boards and Committees, and participate in community service projects. The impact of their efforts for the Alumni Association is immense, but so too is the satisfaction our volunteers realize from contributing in this meaningful way.

"I believe the biggest benefit to participating with an Alumni Club is the ability to meet and network with people in your area. To interact with one another for leadership, career, and social opportunities is invaluable. It's our way of keeping UMass Amherst alive and growing postgraduation,” said Krissy Forloney ’03, ’04G, leader of the Providence, Rhode Island, Alumni Club. Volunteers lead thirtyfive Alumni Clubs and act as international contacts in nineteen countries.

Adam Martignetti ’01 said, “Volunteering is a great way not only to make a meaningful impact on your local community, wherever that may be, but also to stay connected to fellow UMass Amherst alumni. As a member of the Alumni Association's Volunteer and Advocacy Committee, I see firsthand all the great things our alumni are doing, and it makes me proud. It makes me want to do even more to help."

Still others have lent their time and talents through career development programs for alumni and students. Alumni speakers have shared their professional experiences in the areas of networking, interview skills, and career transition, to name a few.

As an alumni volunteer, you can give of yourself however and whenever you choose. Many programs and commitment levels are available. Visit UMassAlumni.com for more information or contact the Alumni Association at alumni@admin.umass.edu.
