Alesha Widdall ’12
Hometown: Whitney Point, New York
A talented freshman with international experience, she started
in nine of the team’s first 10 games, and has a 7-3 record with
three shutouts.

After 70 minutes of regulation and two overtime periods, the
women were still tied 1-1 in the race for the Atlantic
10 regular season title against Temple.
The game was sent to penalty strokes where the Minutewomen won,
2-1. Widdall made four saves, followed by three stops in the
stroke-off, to earn the victory in goal. |

SOCCER
Zack Simmons ’09
Hometown: Durham, New Hampshire

Amherst Men's Soccer)
Simmons owns nearly every UMass goalkeeping record with a chance
this year to break the record for career goals against average.
As a junior, he led the Minutemen to their first-ever appearance
in the NCAA College Cup in 2007 after a historic postseason run.
The team lost 1-0 to Ohio
State despite Simmons’ six saves. His stellar play was recognized
early in 2008 when he was named the UMBRO/Soccer
News Net National Player of the Year, which honors the top
men’s soccer player in the country.
Simmons was named the national Academic
All-American of the year
by ESPN magazine. He was also voted to the Academic All-American
first team. |

LACROSSE
Doc Schneider ’09
Hometown: Massapequa, New York

Men's Lacrosse)
Schneider rose to national prominence when he led the Minutemen
to the 2006 NCAA Final as a freshman, which saw him named New
England Rookie of the Year. Since, he has become an emotional
leader on the field and in the locker room. He stands fourth
all-time at UMass Amherst in career saves with 548, and became
only the fifth player in the program’s history to reach 500. |

What They Did on Summer Vacation
Jon Korhonen ’06 and Andy McCarron
’05, ’08G teamed up with the Children’s
Hunger Fund this past summer and rode 3,500 miles from Boston to San
Francisco, raising more than $17,000 for the Fund in the process. The
duo pedaled through New York across the Catskills then on through Pennsylvania,
Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, north through Iowa and then onward through
Nebraska, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, Nevada and finally to California
and the Golden Gate Bridge. Along the way, Korhonen and McCarron camped
and stayed overnight with friends and family after averaging roughly
100 miles per day.

The Voice
Josh Maurer has been named the interim play-by-play announcer for
UMass football and basketball this season, replacing Bob Behler,
who left for Boise State. A formal search for a new announcer
is set to begin next spring.

A new fence is being installed at the softball complex for $94,000. |
Lights, Cameras, Action
Permanent lights were installed at McGuirk Alumni Stadium at a
cost of $1.8 million. They debuted when men’s football opened
its season besting Albany, 28-16.
Down Under
A pedestrian tunnel under Commonwealth Avenue that connects Boyden
Gym and the playing fields is scheduled for $371,000 in structural
repairs. |
Home Court Advantage
The tennis courts behind the Mullins Center were resurfaced for
$29,000.
Sitting Pretty
New bleachers are being installed at Garber Field for $435,000
in campus and private donations. A new accessible press box at
the field will be completed by December for an additional $140,000. |
