Reunion Weekend Reboots Memories of Campus
Class of 1959 alumni from across the country returned to campus in June for their 50th reunion. The Alumni Association hosted the weekend, which included: the presentation of the Class of 1959 Nursing Scholarship Endowment, a breakfast reception with Chancellor Holub, campus tours, lectures, school, college and Greek reunions, and an evening banquet with live music and dancing.
“ There are many changes on campus, but a lot has remained the same. I’m so happy to see the older buildings as I remembered them with the brick and stone. I don’t really like the newer concrete buildings, but I’m glad that UMass is moving forward because it is such a progressive place.”

“ What impressed me most after being away for some 25 years are all the changes to the campus. The new central heating plant and all the playing fields are truly spectacular. Even though I’m living in Los Angeles, I feel close to this school and it’s very heartening to see all the progress at UMass.”
—Robert Dallmeyer ’59
“ When I started at UMass, girls didn’t wear pants on campus. We wore skirts and knee socks, except in very cold weather. And there was no Student Union, so we huddled together in the C-Store, which was probably not as big as most kitchens today. But we loved it here so much that we came back early from winter vacation to skate on College Pond. Great worries hadn’t hit us yet.”
—Judith (Fleischer) Glass ’59
“ We met here and were engaged here, so UMass has a lot of special memories for us. Walking around campus, we remember the spring formals, hiking across campus in the snow, and the 8:00 a.m. English and history classes in the Old Chapel. It’s been wonderful to experience this again.”
