Staros, Provost and Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs; Mike Malone, Vice Chancellor, Research and Engagement; Steve Goodwin, Dean, College of Natural Sciences.
Chancellor Robert C. Holub logged more than 2,000 frequent flyer miles during his first year in office to attend events coordinated by the Alumni Association. He met alumni, shared his vision for the campus, and learned who UMies are, first-hand.
In March 2009, Chancellor Holub toured Naples, West Palm Beach, and Fort Myers, Florida. He told several hundred alumni about the best class ever assembled in the campus’s history, in terms of both composite SAT scores and high school grade point averages. “And, adding to the strength of our campus community is the incredible level of ethnic and cultural diversity that this group brings with it—the highest we’ve ever seen,” said Holub.
Closer to home, in Boston and Cape Cod, the Chancellor described positive changes affected by sustainable research. “Campus is bursting with projects from biofuels and cutting-edge hydrogen fuel-cell science, to solar and wind energy, recycling, and green building,” said Holub, placing us at the forefront to “reduce our country’s greenhouse gas emissions and dependence on fossil fuels.”
At whistle-stops in New York and Washington, DC, in May, Holub unveiled his “Framework for Excellence” for positioning UMass Amherst among the best public research institutions in the country. The Framework lays out a strategy for faculty development, graduate education programs, residential life and student affairs, diversity and advocacy, and communications and development efforts.
