WHEN THE MINUTEMAN MARCHING BAND takes the field this fall, it will look as snazzy as it sounds – thanks to 400 new outfits, including a few spares, bestowed on the 330-member company by the office of UMass President William Bulger.

The band last marched in their old togs in January, during the inaugural parade of President George W. Bush. Those uniforms had been in service, says MMB director George Parks, since the band performed for the inauguration of President Reagan in 1981.

The new look incorporates both the official university logo and the UMass athletic logo. It features white tunics, maroon sashes, and black trousers – all with maroon and gold trim.

Associate band director Thom Hannum ’84G has received a special gift of late too: In August, he was recognized by the Drum Corps International for 20 years of excellence in the field. Feted at the DCI World Championship in Buffalo, Hannum was praised for his contributions in percussion arrangement, writing and instrument design. In January, he’ll be inducted into the DCI Hall of Fame.
