ON OCTOBER 11, AS PART of a celebration of its 50th birthday, the School of Nursing rededicated Skinner Hall, which opened in 1949 as the home of home economics. It will be renovated to become the school’s new home in 2005. One of the celebration’s highlights was a talk by alumna Mary Chaffee ’83, deputy director of the U.S. Navy Office of Homeland Security, who also received an honorary doctorate. Chaffee, who earned the 2001 UMass Amherst Distinguished Alumna Award, has been in the U.S. Navy for 19 years, has worked as a critical-care and emergency nurse, a staff educator, a health care administrator and computer systems administrator, and co-editor of Policy and Politics in Nursing and Health Care.
