| NOT ALL TURTLES THAT WASH ashore on Cape Cod can be saved, but even those that can’t still have value to Bob Prescott. On the day we arrived in Wellfleet to photograph Prescott, a 600- pound leatherback that had died after becoming entangled in a buoy line was brought in to the Audubon Sanctuary. Despite suffering from a difficult back ailment, Prescott leapt into action and, with the help of Dennis Murley and other Audubon staffers, autopsied the giant sea creature on the spot, taking tissue samples and saving its organs, skull and other parts for marine researchers and museums around the country, including UMass Amherst’s own biological collections.(photo by Ben Barnhart) |
