Message from the President

AS PRESIDENT OF THE UMASS Amherst Alumni Association, I get to talk with UMass Amherst alumni at campus events, athletic games and meetings. Two questions I often hear are: How does the alumni association support the university? and why should I become a dues-paying member?

The alumni association is a dynamic organization that strives to keep our 187,805 UMass Amherst alumni connected. In addition to reunions and Homecoming, nearly 50 regional clubs and their volunteers help with legislative advocacy, student recruitment, enhancement of our image and community service. We encourage alumni feedback to help shape policies and programs, while building a strong network of alumni advocates. When you join the association your dues contribute to the financial stability necessary to create and enhance opportunities to strengthen UMass Amherst.

I know there is some confusion about the difference between making a gift through the annual fund and becoming a member of the alumni association. Both are very important, but they have different functions.
Joining the Alumni Association

The alumni association membership program is another way to support your alma mater. Annual membership fees sponsor student and alumni programs such as the Grants Program, Family Day, the Distinguished Alumni Awards and Commencement Ball. Membership dollars also support scholarships for both prospective and current students, helping to attract and retain high quality students. Membership does make a difference on our campus. If you are not currently a member, I encourage you to join today, online through our secure server at www.UMassAlumni.com or call (800) 456-UMASS (8627).

Giving to the Annual Fund
The annual fund encourages alumni to make annual gifts directly to the university. These gifts may be made to your school, college or department, an athletic or student activity, the library or financial aid. Some gifts simply provide undesignated support to be used where most needed. Both have an important, immediate impact on the campus and are critical in ensuring that UMass Amherst remains excellent. If you already donate to the university, please keep giving. If you do not yet donate, consider making a gift. Your generosity will pay repeated dividends in the lives of students and help make the difference between an excellent and a great education.

New Partnership
I am very excited about our new partnership with UMass Magazine. Connections, this new alumni association section of the magazine, highlights the wonderful programs, services and initiatives the association offers you.

As always, if you have questions about the association or if we can be of assistance to you, please contact us at (800) 456-UMASS (8627) or e-mail us at alumni@ admin.umass.edu. We enjoy hearing from you!
