IF EVER THERE WAS AN animal lovers’ campus, it is this one. We offer, as evidence, this charming, undated archival photograph of nicely dressed Mass Aggie students giving a well-behaved dairy cow a critical once-over. The criteria for dairy cow judging, says retired professor of dairy management Bill Graves, was and still is “dairy type and character,” meaning “a nice square udder, not hanging low; good conformation, meaning a straight top line from the base of the head to the tail; and ‘femininity,’” which, he explains, is a refined neck and head and a slight bend at the hock of the hind legs. As evidence that the animal loving tradition is thriving in the UMass community of the early 21st century, see our reports in this issue on: canine taxi service, Peregrine falcon library users, Animal Planet host and superstar Jeff Corwin ’02, wildlife conservationist Robert Prescott ’73, and zoo veterinarian Janet Martin ’86. Animals of the world can rejoice in our graduates! |
