UMass Amherst Alumni Association Annual Report 2003
July 1, 2002 – June 30, 2003
|
AS A MEMBER OF THE UMass Amherst alumni association, you have contributed to the proud spirit of our alma mater. As a Life Member myself, I feel an enormous sense of pride in being a part of the rich history and culture of UMass Amherst. Your membership commitment to the association this year has enabled us to sponsor student and alumni programs including the grants program, Homecoming Weekend, the Student Alumni Relations Society and our new online services. Your membership dollars have also supported scholarships for current and prospective students. Our commitment to you is continued support to the campus, our alumni and our students; enhanced networks of UMass Amherst alumni through our regional clubs; and services and benefits that are useful and relevant to you. Together, with your help and the help of our dedicated volunteer leaders, we are continuing to position UMass Amherst as a dynamic and influential institution of higher education within the Commonwealth and the country.

BOARD COMMITTEE HIGHLIGHTS FOR FY03
Alumni Awards and Events Committee
• Four alumni, three friends of the university and one faculty member were honored at the annual Distinguished Alumni Awards Luncheon at the State House in the spring.
• Over 40 alumni club leaders and steering committee members participated in the Annual Leadership Conference held on campus in the fall. These volunteer leaders learned more about their role in furthering the mission of the association and the campus.
Executive Committee
• The association assumed title sponsorship of the chancellor’s inauguration festivities with a lead gift of $50,000, which was used to match individual gifts.
• Bylaw revisions were implemented, requiring board committee chairs to be members of the executive committee.
Finance Committee
• Under the direction of the investment committee, 70 percent of the association’s available assets for reinvestment were placed with the UMass Foundation in short-term cash management vehicles. The remaining 30 percent was evenly distributed between the Commonfund and Appleton Partners in long-term equities.
• Over 40 campus groups and alumni-based organizations received grants to help fund programs and initiatives for students, faculty, alumni and friends of the university.
Communication and Public Affairs Committee
• The association’s 2002 legislative survey was compiled and published online in September. Over 141 candidates running for legislative offices in the Commonwealth participated in the survey.
• UMassAlumni.com was redesigned. The Web site features new online services including an online alumni directory, career resources, online class notes and permanent UMass Amherst e-mail addresses.
Membership and Member Services Committee
• A partnership was formed with Marsh Insurance Services, offering discounted insurance programs to UMass Amherst alumni.
• A partnership was formed between the association and the clubs program. Each club, now chartered by the alumni association receives $5 of the dues received for each paid annual Maroon and Life alumni association member residing within the club’s defined zip code area.
Student Affairs and Scholarship Committee
• The 21st Century Leader Awards, designed to recognize students who are academically accomplished and who have contributed to the university by exceptional achievements that distinguish them or enhance the reputation of the campus, were established. Eleven seniors were honored with this distinction at Commencement ceremonies.
• The association awarded 42 Book Awards to high school juniors throughout the Commonwealth. Recipients are ranked in the top 10 percent of their class, are active in extracurricular activities and have demonstrated leadership in their school community.
