PEREGRINATIONS: A PEREGRINE FALCON, ESCORTED by her protective mother, (right) made her freshman flight in mid-July from atop the university library before wildlife officials could band her. Surprised that the fledgling had made it through a cold, rainy spring, they say her survival bodes well for next year’s nest.
Hungry Milky Way: Astronomy Professor Martin Weinberg is part of the Two-Micron All Sky Survey team (2MASS), that shows the Milky Way consuming its neighbor, Sagittarius dwarf galaxy. “Sagittarius has been whittled down to the point that it cannot hold itself together much longer,” says Weinberg.
Byting the Bard: Arthur Kinney, director of the Massachusetts Center for Renaissance Studies, with colleagues from the University of Newcastle, will do a computerized analysis of Shakespeare to detect writing styles and collaborations. Their $110,000 grant is funded by the NEH and the Australian Research Council.
Party planner: Professor of political science Jeffrey Sedgwick is on the federal commission planning Ben Franklin’s 300th birthday celebration in 2006. Says Sedgwick, Frank-lin was known for his “dislike of everything that tended to debase the spirit of the common people.” |
