PRESIDENT'S ANNUAL APPEAL

LINKING UMASS TO THE STATE'S economic vitality, President William Bulger has asked lawmakers for a 10.5 percent increase in funding. Speaking before the Senate Ways and Means Committee March 11, Bulger called his $512.9 million request an investment that “will pay large human and economic dividends for generations of Massachusetts citizens..”
Acknowledging the tough choices facing lawmakers, Bulger said that “our challenge is to move our citizenry from a pattern of low skills and high public subsidies to a pattern of high skills and moderate public subsidies. A vibrant system of public higher education is a certain means of doing this and of helping the commonwealth to meet the health care, child care, and housing needs of our most vulnerable citizens.”
That same week, Bulger launched the “President’s Annual Appeal,” a first-ever system-wide fund he is calling “A Pledge of Excellence.” The university’s trustees led off the drive with contributions totalling $50,000.
The president’s senate testimony is online at www.umass.edu/actnow. Pledge forms for the President’s Appeal are available at www.massachusetts.edu. |
