Message from the President

EXCITEMENT REIGNS ON CAMPUS RIGHT now. Members of the Class of 2005 are transitioning from students to alumni. They leave UMass Amherst prepared for successful careers and graduate programs full of hope and enthusiasm. The Class of 1955 returns to campus in June to celebrate its 50th Class Reunion. Classmates will come back with stories of successful career journeys and family milestones. The Alumni Association welcomes new faces to its Board of Directors next month at its Annual Meeting. These alumni representatives will help to move our organization forward with their knowledge and love for their alma mater.

As I prepare to end my term as president of the Alumni Association, I can honestly say that it has been an honor, and at times humbling, to represent you, our alumni. I have enjoyed meeting many of you and hearing your UMass Amherst stories. We all have a story to tell and I encourage you to share yours with prospective students.

My own children pursued their degrees here. Jamie received his bachelor’s in biology
in 2000; Lauren is a member of the Class of 2005. She just completed her master’s in education. Many of you have grandparents, parents, siblings, and children who graduated from UMass Amherst. Please share your UMass Amherst family tree with us to help us grow our legacy program.

The one thought I would like to leave you with as I step down is the understanding that the Alumni Association is here to serve and support you, our alumni, and engage you in the life of your alma mater. Join us at social, educational, cultural, and athletic events on campus and in your hometowns. Connect with classmates and friends through the Online Alumni Directory. Travel the world with fellow alumni on one of our unique group trips. Send us information about your achievements and those of your family members for UMass Amherst magazine. Above all, become a member of the Alumni Association.
I ask you to give the same support and encourage-ment you showed me to your next president,

Hal Lane ’60. He is a wonderful alumnus, leader
and educator.

My family and I thank you for your kindness and generosity.
