The Smart Money
Matthew Littlefield ’99

MATTHEW LITTLEFIELD'S ’99 MOTTO IS taped on his laptop: You just do. “It’s not unusual to feel like the odds aren’t in my favor at any given moment,” explains Littlefield, senior director in Mellon’s Private Wealth Management Group. “I taped it there to remind me that failure was not an option. Since then I’ve learned that failure is as strong—if not stronger—of a teacher as success.”

Littlefield oversees new business development for wealth management services and for high-net-worth individuals and families, as well as their business interests. In other words, he knows a thing or two about pressure. “The pivotal moment for me came during a challenging quarter when business really took off,” says Littlefield. “Although obvious in retrospect, it hit me just how much business is not about immediate success, but rather work and determination evolving into a sustainable business practice. The stronger the foundation, the more viable that business will ultimately become.”

After graduating from UMass Amherst, Matt furthered his studies at Oxford University (Trinity) and participated in the foreign exchange program at El Centro Para Extranbjeros in Taxco, Mexico. Now he serves on several advisory boards, including the UMass Amherst System Finance Committee and the Celebrate Life Foundation, an organization that assists mothers undergoing chemotherapy.

Professional growth, he admits, is wonderful, “but I have a four-year-old daughter and a three-month-old son at home,” says Littlefield. “And everything pales in comparison to fatherhood.”
