Where Worlds Collide
Shan-Shan Sheng ’87G

WHEN SHAN-SHAN SHENG APPLIED for a visa to pursue her academic and artistic dreams in the United States in 1982, the staff at the consulate looked at her artwork then asked her if she could do a painting right there in front of them, that very afternoon.

“I thought to myself that this would be a good opportunity for me to show them my ability. I brought my art supplies and started painting for them. After doing only half the painting, they gave me the visa,” says Sheng proudly. “That is the moment I knew that I could use my ability to become a successful artist.”

Through sculpture and abstract paintings in vivid colors, Sheng creates universal messages fueled by her Chinese-American heritage. Of her 20 years working as a professional artist, she has spent the last 12 years creating public works of art. She is most proud of two projects: Dawn of the New Millennium was commissioned for the Jin Mao Tower, which is the tallest building in China and the third-tallest building in the world; and Dancing Ribbon, located in the International Financial Center II, in Hong Kong (the second-tallest building in the world).

Sheng’s large-scale public projects incorporate universal messages that can be appreciated anywhere in the world. Her installations literally span the globe, from the city where she was born, Shanghai, to a city known for its architecture, Chicago, to the bicultural city of Hong Kong. Sheng now lives and works in San Francisco.
Visitors to UMass Amherst can view one of Sheng’s works in the W.E.B. Du Bois Library.
