Theater Visionary
David M. Korins ’99

SCENERY DESIGNERS TELL STORIES. THEY use wood, nails, paint, and props to evoke emotions and sensations that draw the audience into the tale. From the moment the curtains open onto a set designed by David Korins, viewers are transported to a specific time and place.

From his design firm in New York, Korins designs scenes for theater, television, dance, and advertising. Most of his work is in theater, both on and off Broadway, and in numerous regional theaters. “I’ve been fortunate to be chosen by people that are very accomplished in the industry,” says Korins, “and that has allowed me to contribute to some really unique projects.” Korins has been profiled by the New York Times and American Theater Magazine, among others; last year he was named one of 10 “people of the year” by nytheatre.com. In 2003, American Theater Wing awarded him the prestigious Henry Hewes Design Award. Korins has been nominated twice for a Drama Desk Award.

Korins and his wife, director Carolyn Cantor, founded the Edge Theatre Company five years ago to produce innovative, challenging works for the stage and to support artists in a non-compromising environment. “I am very proud of keeping true to our original vision,” says Korins. He advises students to learn about theater and design through books but also through life. Says Korins, “Keep your eyes and ears open, travel, and read.”
