PANG-CHIEH HSU AND DENNIS MCGINNIS, third-year MFA candidates, were awarded two of 10 annual fellowships given by the Joan Mitchell Foundation. Both received $10,000 in “recognition of artistic merit.” Both painters had works on display in May in Herter Art Gallery.
Pang’s painting, Independence, above, is part of a triptych about a love story. “I tried to give a sense of the female character,” writes Pang, “by using high heel shoes where the shape of the heel echoes the shape of the female body. A copy of Fortune magazine rests on the shelf to symbolize her desire for financial independence.” (photo by Ben Barnhart) |
