THE DAVID J. KLINGENER FUND memorializes the zoology professor who taught mammalogy and evolutionary biology at UMass from 1965 until his death in 1995. The fund was established in 1996 with a gift of $125,000 from his mother, Ruth Klingener who died in September 2002. In her will Ruth Klingener bequeathed an additional $400,000 to the fund named for her son.

James Young, chairman of Judaic and Near Eastern studies, has been named to a 13-member jury to judge entries for the creation of a memorial to the victims of the 9/11 attacks in New York.

Gregory Tew, assistant professor of polymer science and engineering, has been selected as an Office of Naval Research Young Investigator, with a three-year grant of $380,000. He is part of a team that is constructing large molecules that are antibacterial, and could be embedded in such items as countertops and “smart” fabrics for surgical gowns.

Lixin Gao, computer systems engineer in the department of electrical and computer engineering, has received a $40,000 research fellowship from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. He is one of only 117 scientists to receive the fellowship, which recognizes and supports young scientists in seven fields.

WMUA-FM, UMass’ student and community radio, has received four awards from the Associated Press, including Best Collegiate Continuing Coverage for the UMass chancellor’s search and Best Collegiate Play-by-Play for coverage of men’s basketball. Two honorable mentions were awarded for other reporting.

Bruce MacCombie, associate dean of the College of Humanities and Fine Arts, had his symphonic composition, “Into the Light,” performed in May in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Five Colleges Inc. has received a three-year $535,000 grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to teach Arabic, Farsi, Georgian, Hindi and Turkish with new Web-based techniques.
