THE TITLE OF ALICE TUAN'S play,“Some Asians,” suggests her ironic take on history and culture. Tuan, who was in residence at UMass during February, attended rehearsals of her play, which was staged by the theater department at the end of the month. The play goes into reverse to present vignettes in the history of China, starting with contemporary Hong Kong and proceeding backward to Marco Polo and beyond. One critic has said that Tuan “sifts out the illusions of our present, and expresses the clash and merge of past and present, East and West.” |
