Plant and soil scientist Caroline J. DeMoranville has been appointed the director of the UMass Cranberry Experiment Station in East Wareham. The first woman to serve in this position, she is the daughter of Irving DeMoranville, the station’s director from 1981 to 1996. The family has been involved with cranberry growing for three generations.
Alumnus Richard Gere ’71 received a Golden Globe for his performance in the movie version of the musical “Chicago.”
Journalism Professor Madeleine Blais’ book about the Amherst High School girls’ basketball team, In These Girls, Hope is a Muscle, was named one of the 100 top sports books of all time by Sports Illustrated magazine.
Cynthia Lee Baldwin, veterinary and animal sciences, was named Distinguished Veterinary Immunologist for 2002 by the American Association of Immunologists.
Paul Fisette, natural resources conservation, has received a three-year appointment to the National Academy of Sciences Board on Infrastructure and the Constructed Environment.
Professor of Nursing Jeanine Young-Mason was named Distinguished Professor by University President William M. Bulger. Young-Mason has done research in the development of the concept of compassion.
Jack Ahern, chair of landscape architecture and regional planning, has won the 2002 research award from the American Society of Landscape Architects. He was recognized for his book, Greenways as Strategic Landscape Planning: Theory and Application.
Lynn Margulis, a geosciences professor specializing in cell genetics, was named one of the country’s 50 “most important women scientists” by Discover magazine. Her latest book is Acquiring Genomes: A Theory of the Origins of Species. |
