THE DEPARTMENT OF LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE and regional planning at the University of Massachusetts marks a century this year. Begun in 1903 with one professor and three students (one of whom defected for entomology), the department founded as landscape gardening by Frank Albert Waugh is now the second-oldest in the country, and the first established in a land-grant institution.
