Book help 24/7. Need help finding a book? You can get it all day, every day, through a new library reference service at UMass Amherst as well as at UMass Boston. The change was made possible by the Internet and the Boston Library Consortium, a group of 10 New England universities. Their Web site is www.library.umass.edu/ask/.

Building teachers. The History Institute has received a $116,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities for a teacher development project in the summer of 2003.

Drifting up. Frank Keimig of the Climate System Research Center tells us what we probably already noticed, that this year’s snowfall has been about four times what it was last year.

Giving generously. FleetBoston financial chairman Terrence Murray and the bank’s charitable foundation have donated $1 million to establish the Terrence Murray Commonwealth College Honors Professorship. Murray received an honorary degree from UMass Amherst in May 2001.

Diabetes and exercise. The Glass Family Trust has given a $168,500 grant to exercise science faculty member Barry Braun and Baystate Medical Center researcher Dr. Stuart Chipkin, to study how exercise can affect insulin resistance in people with diabetes.

Twenty years to cleanup. In an article in Environmental Science and Technology, microbiologist Derek Lovley predicts that if no further contamination takes place, Boston Harbor could clean itself up in the next two decades. Some of the microorganisms that Lovley studies are already hard at work devouring contaminants known as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.

Count the ways. Communication grad student Melissa Click is doing her Ph.D. thesis on the Martha Stewart phenomenon, and in part, on what it is about the homemaking guru that we love to hate.
