Reflection, 2003, by Oriole Farb Feshbach ’74G, oil on canvas, 16" x 30"

How does a painter honor a sculptor? By making a painting of his sculpture. Oriole Farb Feshbach’s Reflection depicts John Townsend’s Minuteman statue near the Campus Pond. Townsend was Feshbach’s teacher when she worked for her 1974 UMass MFA. The painting expresses her gratitude to him and to the department where she thrived as a painter. She has taken liberties in locating the statue, she says, but the UMass symbol does, in fact, reflect in the pond, “just not from there.” Like her other works, Reflection connects ideas and images of art and nature, peace and war, past and present. |
